2024 Rivian R1X: Taking the Off-Road EV Beyond Plaid
WHAT IT IS: How would you want to drive a vehicle that is a cross between a Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo? How about adding a little of the Rivian R1secret T's sauce? That is precisely what our artist's rendering of the future Rivian R1X, which it represents. According to our Rivian sources, the business is hard at work on a rally-inspired performance SUV that will rival the off-road prowess of a Wrangler or Defender and rival the pavement speed of a Cayenne Turbo. Based on spy photos of a seating bucket, we anticipate the R1X will be a little smaller two-row SUV than the R1S it is based on, with a fastback roofline.
WHY IT MATTERS:
We awarded the similar Rivian R1T our 2022 Truck of the Year in part because of its versatility. With ease, it transitions from hard off-roading to towing to carving up a decent back road thanks to its outstanding hydropneumatic suspension. In terms of all-purpose enthusiast SUVs, an R1X with a more obvious performance emphasis has the potential to be a revelation.
The R1X will be powered by new motors and batteries, but it will ride on a significantly condensed version of Rivian's well-known R1 chassis. Four of the new house-built motors that recently made their debut in the two-motor R1S SUV and R1T truck will be used in the R1X, according to sources. These new motors include rotors that have been wrapped with carbon, enabling them to spin at greater rpm and provide more power. The entire system output is expected to be 1,200 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. The own internal battery pack will support the quad-motor R1X.
