Tata introduced the Tiago hatchback in 2016 with a choice of manual or AMT gearboxes and both gasoline and diesel engine choices. Tata, however, abandoned the diesel engine when the switch to BS6 was made in 2020. Since its release, the hatchback has sold over 4,00,000 copies, which says something about people's trust in the vehicle and is further bolstered by its 4-star GNCAP certification. We outline how far the BS6 petrol-manual Tiago gets you on a single tank of fuel.

What is the real-world fuel economy of the Tata Tiago manual?

The 1.2-liter petrol engine in the BS6 Tiago produces 86 horsepower, 1 horsepower more than the BS4 variant, but delivers 113 Nm less torque. Like in the BS4 version, there is no Eco or City driving mode.

In our testing, the Tiago manual delivered 14.95 kpl overall and 13.3 kpl in the city, as opposed to the 19.8 kpl stated by ARAI (overall).

Although the highway statistic appears to be a little low, the fuel economy in the city is decent. This is mostly due to the hatchback's low fifth-gear rev limit while traveling at 100 kph on the highway.

The torque band of the Tiago is intriguing since it pulls smoothly in fifth gear starting at 50 kph. However, it allows you to travel on the highway without having to downshift, which is terrible for fuel efficiency.

Autocar India’s fuel economy testing

Before conducting our real-world fuel efficiency test, we completely fill the tanks of our test vehicles and keep the recommended tire pressures. We maintain predetermined average speeds while driving these vehicles in the predetermined city and highway loops. We always have a reference automobile going along—one that we have already tested—to keep an eye on any unfavorable variance. Driver pattern variances are further neutralized by regular driver switches. We calculate the economy by filling them all the way to the brim at the conclusion of each cycle. In each automobile throughout the test, there is just one person operating the air conditioning and other electrical features like the music system, indicators, and wipers as needed, much like a typical user would. We take pleasure in our testing results since they are reliable and accurately reflect what consumers might anticipate in the real world.
