Here is a look at the fuel economy numbers for the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid based on our actual tests.
The Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki's Creta challenger, has at last arrived. Its robust hybrid drivetrain, with a top ARAI fuel economy rating of 27.97kpl, is what makes it stand out from the competition. The focus of this article is the Grand Vitara strong hybrid's real-world fuel efficiency, even though it is also offered with a mild-hybrid engine and is priced from Rs 10.45 lakh to Rs 16.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
- Atkinson Cycle with 1.5 liter, three cylinder engine operates effectively.
- Electric motor is powered by a 0.76kWh lithium-ion battery.
- Strong hybrid engine produces 116 horsepower.
The Grand Vitara strong hybrid recorded the greatest city mileage of any vehicle we have tested to date, across all segments, with an astounding 23.77kpl in our real-world testing. When compared to its competitors, its highway efficiency, which was somewhat lower at 20.39 kpl, is still quite good.
What is the real world fuel efficiency of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid?
Strong hybrid drivetrain of the Grand Vitara allows for all-electric operation (as long as the operational conditions are met, and the battery has adequate charge). According to Maruti (and Toyota), it is feasible to complete 50–60% of a city commute in full electric mode. During our testing, we saw that the engine was mostly operating in EV mode during our city loop, which accounts for the astounding city efficiency.
It is still quite efficient even when the petrol engine engages to either offer greater pulling power (on more aggressive accelerator inputs) or to replenish the low battery. This is because the Atkinson cycle, which is used by the three-cylinder engine, is more effective since it delays the valves' closure during the compression stroke.
The gasoline engine is used far more frequently on the highway than in the city, and the automobile only infrequently shifts to electric-only mode at cruising speeds, resulting in higher fuel consumption.
Autocar India’s fuel efficiency testing
Before conducting our real-world fuel economy test, we completely fill the tanks of our test vehicles and keep the recommended tire pressures. We operate these vehicles at predetermined average speeds while navigating certain city and interstate circuits. Only one person is present in each car for the whole test, using the air conditioning and other electrical features like the music system, indicators, and wipers as needed, much like a typical user would. Driver pattern variances are further neutralized by regular driver switches. As a result of each cycle, we calculate efficiency by filling them up to the brim again.
